The last few days have been difficult. Letting my man/child go has required peace that surpasses understanding. I'm just being honest. He is in a good place. I gave him to "The Village" of Morehouse College and I trust that all is well. But I have to put this in perspective; I didn't have to let my man/child go because he was killed. Jared is a diamond in the rough, but a diamond sure 'nuff...so is every other son of a darker hue. Jared Okona is not Michael Brown. But like Michael Brown, Jared is the son of a darker hue that must play by the rules of a system that at times only sees the color of his skin. Contrary to what many believe, sons of a darker hue are not always judged by the content of their character. My husband and I have had many intimate conversations with Jared that many Americans will never have to have with their sons. Entitlement sometimes gives you an opportunity to walk away even when the law has been broken. An example, a couple of teenagers decided recently to break in and give themselves an unauthorized tour of Miami Heat Ray Allen's Coral Gables, Florida home. Do you know what would have happened to Jared if he had committed such an act? He certainly would have not walked away without going to jail. The point: if you commit a crime, you should be arrested but the scales of justice are most times not in favor of young black males. Side note: all the self-proclaimed leaders that show up only when there is media coverage, I am ashamed of you. When the story is no longer big news will you be there for cities like Ferguson, Missouri? Will you use your influence to change things from the inside out? Cops kill our young black males more often than they should but they are also killing each other and we are not talking about it. I'm ranting, I hope somebody hears me. This is Tuesday talk.
