We all know the nursery rhyme and how it goes: "Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty back together again." In this story, no royalty involved, only a daughter that had a great fall. Sometimes the worst thing you can imagine does happen; even when you can't imagine it will happen to somebody you love. This Tuesday talk is personal. My daughter was raped in high school and I just found out about it in the last few months. I am sure, it looks like a bleak picture from the outside looking in, and you are completely numb in this moment--none of us want the very worst to happen to those we love. The truth is all of us are like Humpty in some way...we are happy, sitting on our wall, enjoying life and then something or someone kicks the hell out of us and we fall off the wall; crashing to the ground, we are broken, never to be the same again. Though never the same, we can be put back together again. With wise counsel and amazing grace, my daughter continues to heal--her story an amazing one because what was meant for evil she has made good. She didn’t stay on the ground cracked in a millions pieces, she become a fierce champion for the LBGT community, a fighter for the underdogs-- many marginalized and invisible and a facilitator/leader involved in workshops for those who have been violated. My baby got kicked off the wall but you should see her now, she's an inspiration for anyone that has ever been through something as traumatic as being raped. This is Tuesday talk.
