In some traditions, birds are angels sent by divine order. They are spiritual, creative, imaginative, intuitive and inspirational. The eagle is such a creature. It is not just a bird of prey but these majestic, royal creatures soar as they ride the wind. John Keats said, "Eagles may seem to sleep wing-wide upon the air, but seemingly sleeping they are not." If you have ever seen this bird in flight, there is so much wisdom
in how the eagle uses its available energy. It knows how to use the air current to maneuver to heights unknown. External eagle medicine: the foresight to see the big picture, a gift of discernment, and the ability to rise above the ordinary. Some call it a "bird's eye" view--I call it Soaring Wing-Wide 102. The eagle can live to be 70 years or older. But in order for it to get to that golden age, it must go through a stage of rebirth that is extremely painful. The eagle's talons work very well until it gets to be in its 40's.
During the 40's, the talons become weak and its once strong beak is bent out of shape. Its thick feathers get stuck to its wings and flying is not as majestic as it use to be. At this point, the eagle has two options; die or get through a painful process of change and rebirth. If the eagle wants rebirth, it flies to the highest mountain and does the imponderable--the eagle strikes its beak against the rock solid mass of the mountain continuously until it is loose enough to pull out. This is internal eagle medicine. It is a time of solitude and rebuilding--at this time the eagle is not soaring "wing-wide." While it is waiting for its beak to grow back--it also plucks out it talons and feathers. The process does not happen over night--it could take up to 150 days. If the eagle's focus is on being lonely and isolated and not rebuilding it could die prematurely. My message from God today: Each kind of bird has a uniquely-shaped beak, wings, and even feather shape so that everything about it is perfect for the lifestyle it lives. The various wing shapes allow them to dart after a bug, soar miles above a field, or fly for months over the ocean. Just as God cares enough to give each bird exactly what it needs, so you have been given the exact talents and personality to live the life God has given you. I don't know about you, but I want to soar "wing-wide" towards the heavens in 2011. I want to climb higher, go farther, and dive deeper. I want to live the life of my dreams even when others don't think it is possible. We insult the Creator when we live so far beneath our potential. It is even more insulting when we won't stop scurrying around to meet deadlines for meaningless projects that leave us empty and angry. God said we were marvelously made--we either believe that or we don't. Maybe you are not the eagle but the owl, or the crane, or the dove. Whatever bird symbolizes your essence be that bird operating at full capacity and soar "WING-WIDE." This is Tuesday talk--I hope you heard me.
